Vale Barbara Doherty
(The Lady with the Hat)

The Tamworth Birdwatchers extend our condolences to Barbara’s adult children John, Susan, Timothy, Paul, David and their families following the recent passing of Barbara Marjorie Doherty on 8 August 2017.
Barbara was well known to our members as an active participant in our social meetings and Tuesday bird watching walks. She was always ready for a chat with a smile on her face to brighten up the day. Barb was known for her collection of brightly coloured hats. Many were on display at the recent Celebration of Barbara’s life.
Over her lifetime, Barbara was an active member of numerous community organisations including a major long term commitment as a telephone counsellor at Lifeline. Barbara always had a very active social conscience on a wide range of issues. She was always prepared to stand up and make her views known to anyone who would listen. She enjoyed researching topical issues and reaching a reasoned conclusion. Barbara loved classical music and reading.
She was a member of the National Parks Association of NSW, Tamworth Branch (a leading nature conservation organisation) for around 40 years. During the national campaign to stop the construction of the Franklin Dam she was a very active member of the local South West Tasmania Committee even confronting our local Federal Member of Parliament of the time to intervene on the issue.
When members of the NPA started the Tamworth Birdwatchers almost 20 years ago Barbara was a foundation member. She enjoyed many of the early camping trips. Even waking up to a heavy frost in a tiny and flimsy one person tent could not put a dent in her enthusiasm.
Barb was still joining in the Birdwatcher’s activities, particularly the Tuesday bird walks, up to late last year, including a pre-Christmas 2016 trip to the Tamworth Botanic Gardens.
Barbara’s presence has been missed since illness has reduced her participation in the Tamworth Birdwatcher’s activities. Barbara will be greatly missed by her family and friends from around the region. Rest in Peace.
